Good Night and Night Watch

I don’t like sailing at night but my better half prefers it. I’m typing this in the dark in the cockpit and keeping Charles company for now, with plans to go to bed shortly and get up early for a sunrise watch. One of us is having coffee and one of us is having a glass of wine.

Today we left land before lunch with full fuel tanks, full water tanks and loose plans to sail through the night. The afternoon was beautiful with the bay alternating between gentle following seas and a glasslike smoothness.

There was just enough wind to let out the jib and motor sail for a while.
While Charles had a nap before dinner I took a solo watch and saw a cargo ship pass close to us and surprisingly closer to a buoy.

Gentle reader, I bid you goodnight from the darkened cockpit. I’ll be up with the sun tomorrow morning to relieve my favorite sailor from his overnight watch.

“…this beginning motion, this first time when a sail truly filled and the boat took life and knifed across the bay under perfect control, this was so beautiful it stopped my breath…” -Paulsen
