Needful Things Times Two

A few days ago I had the honor of reading one of my articles at a First Friday event where the theme was Life Hacks. This means selling everything and moving to a sailboat must be akin to one of those “You’ve Been Doing it Wrong” videos where they tell you how to do a simple thing like making scrambled eggs a million times better. Click here to read the article.

I’m not the queen of life hacks by any stretch of the imagination, however, I’d to share two things that do make my life easier. They might make yours easier as well. I recently received these items from the manufacturers, however, I already had both items from different companies. Since I already liked them quite a bit, I’m happy to pass along discounts on these awesome items!

Marmara Turkish Towels

I love Turkish towels because they dry quickly, they take up hardly any space at all when not in use, and they make my bathroom look like a fancy spa. They have so many uses beyond the shower including converting to a scarf, sarong, or tablecloth.

In addition to Marmara’s quality and the variety of towels they sell, the thing that sticks with me about this company is how deeply committed to the fair trade movement they are.

Carol and Susan are the founders and co-owners of Marmara Imports. Their mission at Marmara is to offer exceptional, eco-friendly, fair-trade textiles to the U.S. market and beyond. Carol and Susan believe in supporting global artisans in their endeavor to sustain not only themselves and their families but also the ancient ways of weaving.  To that end, they partnered with Figen Subasi, a woman-owned business, in Babadagh, Turkey.  Figen has a small atelier where she employs, for a living wage, twelve weavers and their families to produce Marmara’s beautiful products.  Figen’s dream, and now theirs, is to open a school to teach the younger generation the art of hand looming textiles.

Turkish towels, known as pestemals (pesh-te-mahls), are the traditional towel used in Turkey and are known for absorbency and softness.  Compact, lightweight and quick to dry, this eco-friendly product is really more than a towel and should be used with imagination. Think sarong or shawl, throw or tablecloth – when you’re living on a sailboat every piece must have more than one purpose and these towels certainly provide that.

Storetite Reusable Ziplock Bags

The folks at Storetite have some sort of ESP going on. I use ziplock bags all the time and I hate just throwing them away when I’m done. Last year I purchased a set of reusable silicone sous vide bags, and I fell in love. They’re sturdy, washable, and seem to last forever. I use them for things like tea bags and other dry goods, as well as food storage, and I’ve been in love with them since day one. Since I’ve been using them, I hardly use disposable ziplock bags at all.

Not too long ago I wished for another set of these bags. Instead of buying a set, I reluctantly used a disposable bag, and that was that. The very next day, Jessica at Storetite emailed me out of the blue (I mean, really, totally out of the blue with her ESP), and offered to send me a set and a 20% discount code for any of my blog readers who want a set of their own. Of course, I jumped at the chance, and now you can too!

Owning a set of reusable silicone storage bags means you use less single-use disposable plastic and this is something we can all get behind. Single-use plastics commonly end up in the ocean and in landfills but these are a totally different story. These bags are sturdy, built to last, and you can store just about everything in them. Think tea bags, Legos, art supplies, soup, cut veggies, and anything else you’d like to keep safe and fresh.

If you’d like to purchase a set of these awesome bags at 20% off, please contact Jessica for a coupon code at storetite@gmail.com.

Welcome to November. On the home front, we’re getting the boat ready for winter. Our local weather personality has forecasted a few nor’easters, and I suppose its time for me to pull out my purple snowsuit. We’ll be wrapped for the winter by the end of the month, and we’ll stave off the impending cabin fever with lots of wine, rum, writing, and also a bit of land travel. Here’s what last winter looked like.

I’m working on a novel, said every single person (including me) who fancies themselves to be a writer. Please drop me a line if you’re also banging on the keys.
